WELCOME BACK TO THE “AMAZON NEWS” AFTER OUR ONE YEAR EDITORIAL ABSENCE
“It’s good to talk” has never been proven more true than over the pandemic period, and, as a support group, the Amazons have felt anxious about not being able to easily communicate,
promote conversations and awareness and be “there” to support local breast cancer patients at King’s Mill on their pathway through treatment, as we are normally able to do. Well, just
to reassure you - we are here; funds continue to be raised and spent, future events and Support Meetings are planned to be soon resumed and you can find us currently on our regularly
up-dated “facebook” page (there’s always a quiz) and on our web sites, (details on the Back Page) and on our information boards in Reception. So on to our latest news
Thank you from the Chair
Hello every one — It’s good to be back! Firstly, on behalf of the patients, I would like to thank all The Breast Care Doctors and Specialist Nurses,
the Breast Unit Nurses, Receptionists, Administrative Staff, Radiologists, Radiographers Oncologists (The Team) for maintaining their high standards throughout the
restrictions and difficult times.
Next I want to thank all our amazing supporters and friends who have continued to raise funds for our Amazon Charity during the Covid pandemic, enabling breast cancer
patients at King’s Mill to continue to benefit.
We were particularly pleased therefore to donate the £30,000 needed to get the Tomosynthesis technology up and running in King’s Mill’s Breast Care Unit just before the
pandemic! Looking forward to future spending.
It’s been a frustrating time for the Group and we have sorely missed our monthly, Tuesday, Open Support Meetings, hopefully to be resumed again very soon, in the Amazon Lounge.
We are eager to get back to fulfilling all of our Amazon Breast Cancer Support Group roles within King’s Mill and will keep you updated on our “facebook” page, web page and on
the display boards in the Breast Unit Reception Area.
Sadly we have recently lost one of our much-loved founder members, Jill Bingham. Jill, and her family worked hard with Liz Hunter, Ann Adams and Gill Clark to establish the Amazon Charity at King’s Mill in 1995.
Jill was a wonderful lady; diligent, loyal and with a keen sense of humour. She is greatly missed.
Bless you all, and thank you, Beryl Perrin
TOMOSYNTHESIS for local King’s Mill patients!
On-going fund-raising by supporters of the Amazon Breast Cancer Support Group has meant great news for people using King’s Mill Hospital. “State of the art” breast screening tomosynthesis
technology has been installed in the Breast Care Unit in the hospital and we have been delighted to donate the £30,000 to pay for it. The new technology creates advanced imaging, obtaining
multiple X-rays from different angles which can be cross-sectioned and used to construct 3-D images. Trials have showed increased detection rates of breast cancer (up to 40%) and reduction
in having to recall patients not needing further investigations. The Amazons are very pleased to have been able to continue their work for King’s Mill patients even in these strange times,
thanks to our wonderful fundraisers. The Group have also been pleased to have purchased a specialised £1,000 lens for a camera they had previously bought for Mr Jahan’s surgical team.
RAISING AWARENESS & PROMOTING CONVERSATIONS - we can always find time to talk!
We were invited, as representatives of a locally based cancer charity, to a Macmillan Coffee Morning. It was organised by Senior Partnership Leads Dianne Holmes
and Alison Whitton of Academy Transformation Trust Further Education and held in their ATTFE College Area in Sutton’s Idlewells Precinct, to promote informal chats and exchange of information,
as well enjoying those cakes and coffees !
